Moonshot – Federated authentication and access control for any application
Rhys Smith, Moonshot Technical Lead, Janet
DrRhysSmith is an Identity, Access, and Middleware Specialist at Janet and Cardiff University. He has a background in computer security and privacy, and several years of experience of Identity Management and Federated Access practice and technology. At Cardiff University he manages the FAM infrastructure and is a member of the internal Identity Management team. At Janet he is a part of the Strategic Programmes group, which involves developing services and technologies such as the UK federation, eduroam, and Project Moonshot.
Project Moonshot is a major Janet-led initiative, in partnership with many national and international collaborators, to develop a single unifying technology for extending the benefits of federated identity to a broad range of commonly deployed services such as mail, file store, remote access and instant messaging. Its aim is to enhance the user’s experience, and reduce costs both for those organisations supporting users and those delivering services to them. It also aims to help communities and groups of users to take more control of authorisation policies so that they can tailor the authentication and authorisation requirements as they see fit.
This session will give an overview of what Moonshot is and how it works, and how it can be used to protect applications and data.
