This 5 day course, run in conjunction with the GATE team at the University of Sheffield, will provide participants with the core skills needed to develop text-analytics solutions using the GATE Framework. There will be a focus on exploring biomedical data in general and electronic health records in particular, however the techniques learned will be applicable to any text engineering problems and participants from other fields are welcome.
We have been using GATE for the past few years to explore the free-text component of our electronic health records. We have developed applications to extract information including smoking status, diagnosis, prescribing data, test results and level of education. Dr. Rob Stewart will introduce the course by giving a talk entitled: “Enhancing research capability through information extraction – practical experiences from CRIS”

The registration fee for this 5 day course is £1000, or £500 for NHS and Academic staff / students.
Refreshments and Lunches are included in the registration fee, accommodation and transport are not.
This course requires a laptop with GATE installed.
You are welcome to bring your own laptop. We can provide a guest account on the KCL WiFi network and Eduroam will be available. Participants will have access to a Course Preparation Guide which will provide information on installation of any necessary software.
If you would prefer to hire a laptop (with required software pre-installed) for the week, we can arrange this at a cost of £120. Please check the Laptop Hire box in the registration form.
Participants must have some previous exposure to programming concepts (any language).
You will be expected to install the GATE Developer software prior to the course and to be familiar with the basics of the user interface. If you haven’t used GATE before, you should have a go at this introductory workshop
