Summary

This 5 day course, run in conjunction with the GATE team at the University of Sheffield, will provide participants with the core skills needed to develop text-analytics solutions using the GATE Framework. There will be a focus on exploring biomedical data in general and electronic health records in particular, however the techniques learned will be applicable to any text engineering problems and participants from other fields are welcome.

We have been using GATE for the past few years to explore the free-text component of our electronic health records. We have developed applications to extract information including smoking status, diagnosis, prescribing data, test results and level of education. Dr. Rob Stewart will introduce the course by giving a talk entitled: “Enhancing research capability through information extraction – practical experiences from CRIS”
